EARTHNFIRE POTTERY

Pit Fired Pottery

Most of my pieces are thrown on a wheel and after air drying are bisque fired in an electric kiln. The pot is then coated with different chemicals, fern leaves and other organic material, feathers, copper mesh,  sometimes strings and copper wire and then covered with aluminum foil. In the Ocotillo Wells Desert we dig a pit, cover the bottom with saw dust, add our prepared pots, kindling on top of that, and fill the pit with fire wood. The pit is then set on fire and we wait and wonder. After several hours of burning we get a glimpse of our pots in the hot ashes. The next morning we retrieve our pots, wash & wax them,  and marvel at the designs created by the fire. Pit fired pots are not glazed and not suitable to hold liquid. It’s immense beauty is it’s function. Each piece of art created by earth and fire is very unique and no two could ever be alike.
